Henry John Elwes 1846 to 1922

Galanthus “Elwesii”
The Carey-Elwes of Billing and Broxby are cousins of the Elwes of Colesbourne Park and connected by a common ancestor, Geoffrey Elwes who lived from 1546 to
1616 AD.
The local branch of the family lived at Billing Hall, an 18th century mansion. A contemporary of Henry John Elwes, Valentine Dudley Carey-Elwes, Lord of the Manor of Billing, Justice of the Peace, was president of the of the Billing Horticultural and Cottage Gardening Society in 1869. This society held an annual exhibition and presumably Valentine could be relied upon to provide the prizes, but there is no evidence of the intense interest shown by his more illustrious cousin. The family moved away and the hall was demolished in 1956 to be replaced by an up market housing estate.
The family continues to be remembered by several local road names, Elwes Way, Lady Winefride’s Walk and Valentine Way, while the local public house carries the family coat of arms, is also suitably named “The Elwes Arms”
(The horticultural achievements of HJE above were prodigious
and well recorded elsewhere.)
